Provence
We spent a day driving north from the coast through Provence, stopping in St. Remy for lunch. It was a small touristy town that reminded us too much of Leavenworth. Beautiful place with great shops and old buildings, but everything was made in China. So we bought locally-made baguettes, cheese and wine, soaked up some sun-rays in a pretty little square, and then headed on our way. We continued driving north into the French Alps where we paid a pretty penny to cross back over to Italy under Mont Blanc – the 5th longest tunnel in the world (13.5 km long). We were glad for the toll roads that allowed us to drive 110 miles an hour so we could get back to Milan in a jiffy. Shopping in Milan for leather shoes, bags, and ties will be more fun.

To the Beach!
The French Riviera is really all that it’s chalked up to be. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! Turquoise waters, long promenades, fast, sexy cars, ungodly-sized yachts, windy scenic roads, wonderful chateaus tucked everywhere, flower markets, Frenchmen effortlessly climbing huge hills on road bikes, immaculately clean, sunshine, dramatic ocean views, and happy people eating gelato and crepes.
And then there’s Monte Carlo. It falls into its own category. To sum it up; it has sparkles in its paved roads and all the exotic sports car dealerships sit on prime real estate. Oh, the eye candy!

Family Time
Apologies for our website being down all week! I think I broke it when we were doing theme updates. Jeb fixed it… imagine that!
We are having a great time with Janeane and Jesse Boyd touring around the country. They arrived last week and we have been going, going, going. Fun, fun, fun! Will post more about that later.
However, before they arrived we were able to spend a couple of weeks just hanging out with family, helping with projects, and getting caught up. It will be hard for us to leave these sweet kids. We love the Garaways!!!

Ohhh, I Run Ten Mile
There are several reasons that a family may decide to set off on a trip around the world. One is to have experiences that are unavailable or unlikely at home. We hope for this trip to be a real positive for our family. That sounds pretty vague and the idea was, in fact, a little fuzzy for us. You know, kind of like Whirled Peas and The Children at a beauty pageant. Anyway, after a month on the road, and in the sky, and on the sea, I can see that something really is down in that vat. I may even be able to guess at what it is.
I believe sometimes we all get along by learning how to more effectively ignore each other. There are situations that I find stressful. I know that I am likely to blow my cool and be rude or worse. An easy way to “be nice” is to physically remove myself. That is really just a cop out. I am the same jerk hiding in another room to save face. Really, I ought to expend just a little time and energy expressing myself in a kind way. I need to actually care for whoever is in front of me more than I care for my selfishness wants.
Over here in Southeast Asia and then the Middle East and then back to the Western world we will be the same four people with all of our tendencies intact. 747s carry selfishness with no extra baggage fees. So, it seems we have taken the family corn out behind the barn and stuffed it into a moonshine still. Sometimes the circumstances of this trip have us mixing and boiling (just a little!), but as long as we don’t let our jug crack or become compartmentalized, we should have some real strong hooch to pour back into that bottle we call home. Chug-a-lug chug-a-lug.
