Proof of Rest

“Once you settle into a simple beach-front hut, you probably won’t need shoes and the days will melt away.” Lonely Planet pg. 530. It’s true! We’re not exactly sure how many days we’ve been here. However, we are rested and ready to move on. Leaving Lola Bungalow this afternoon for Ko Tao, an island south of here.

Sawat dee kah

– Hello and good morning! Jeb and Levi would say “Sawat dee krap”. The term is used like Aloha or Shalom. When you say thank you or greet someone, you don’t ever shake hands. You should put your hands together in a prayer-like form in front of your mouth and slightly bow.

Seriously the smooooothest coffee I’ve ever had!

Banana Pancakes

We thought it was strange that a motorcycle with a side cart and sign that read “Pancake of Banana” stopped in front of the outdoor restaurant where we were eating.  The waitress told us that we should buy it. “It is very good. You should try it; only 15 baht.”  It turns out they all buy from these road-side carts who cruise around at dinner time. She was right! The crepe-type pancake with drizzled, sweetened condensed milk and sprinkled sugar on it is scrumptious. So, now that we know what to do, we get them every night.

Tropical Thunderstorms

The thunder storms here are EPIC! The storm rolled in last night, starting with a torrential  downpour and continued its epicness in 10 to 15 minute intervals all through the night and will probably continue through the rest of the day. The thunder is so loud and close that it woke us up continually and Dad had dreams of getting hit with lightning . 🙂

Culture Failure.

Someone sat in the first Thai bathroom that we encountered for a good ten minutes trying to visualize the solution to the spatial puzzle represented by the hose with a nozzle.  Solution found! 5 baht (16 cents).

We made it!

This window season Rebekah, Levi and I kept our spirits up and our squeegees moving at what is typically an unsustainable pace with the dream of a bungalow on the sand with delicious Thai food and drink nearby.  Finishing our work in less than the normal number of days would allow us to live in a Jimmy Buffet novel for a spell.  We finished the work, did some traveling, some sightseeing in busy Bangkok, and then hit the road to find our piece of paradise. Our second stop shows promise. We will see how long the Butlers can sit still.

Bangkok, Thailand

Our friends, the Harkins, were so gracious to pick us up at the airport and let us stay with them while we dealt with jet lag and explored the city a bit. On day 2, we purchased day passes for the river boat so that we could easily get around. The contrast of very old and dirty and shiny, modern new was stark.

Congrats Eric Warthen!

Eric correctly guessed that the picture was not sent back from the future, that we were still close to home, and therefore he must be seeing the green shake machine at the 59er Diner in the background. We stopped for shakes on the way to the airport.   Nice work!  Send us your address through the contact us page so that we can send your prize.
